Variety.com – Universal Pictures International Spain has acquired Spanish rights to Fernando Leon’s war-zone set human drama “A Perfect Day,” starring Oscar winners Benicio del Toro (“Traffic”) and Tim Robbins (“Mystic River”) as well as actresses Olga Kurylenko (“Oblivion”) and Melanie Thierry (“The Zero Theorem”).
UPI will release “A Perfect Day” in Spain in 2015. Selling international rights to “A Perfect Day,” WestEnd Films will show a new promo to international buyers at the American Film Market on Sunday.
The first English-language film from Leon, a popular Spanish auteur distinguished by the humor of his social-issue dramas, “Perfect Day” is a dramedy-thriller, turning on a motley group of war-zone aid workers dealing with their own very human dramas: Mambru (Del Toro) wants to go home; Katya once wanted Mambru; B (Robbins) doesn’t know what he wants. And what they want rarely matches what they need. When a corpse contaminates the local well, the aid workers face a race against time across a frenzied war landscape to save the local water supply.
“A Perfect Day” is produced by Mediapro, one of Spain’s biggest media groups, and Leon’s Reposado, in their third co-production of a Leon-directed title.
UPI’s “Perfect Day” pick-up rolls off a robust 2014 for Universal’s London-based international distribution operation, which is already one of the most active of Hollywood studios in the distribution (UPI) and production (UPIP) of international independent titles.
